Silicone Material Selection

Choosing the right silicone material is crucial for the performance of laser-etched keypads. Transparent silicone rubber is often preferred over standard translucent silicone to achieve better color contrast between the inner and outer components. For instance, pairing a white inner plating with a black surface ensures high visibility of laser-marked characters. When using translucent silicone keypads with a gray or black surface, proper backlighting is essential to maintain clear visibility of the characters.

Designing Custom Laser-Etched Keypads: A Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Base Coat Application

Begin by applying a base coat of ink to define the desired characters, patterns, or background colors on the top surface of the keypad.

Step 2: First and Second Coats

The first coat of ink should match the intended legend color. Apply a second coat of black or gray ink to absorb light effectively. Finally, the surface color of the keypad is applied as the last coat.

Step 3: Compression Molding and Laser Etching

The transparent elastomer rubber keypads undergo a compression molding process. After molding, the keypads are coated with an opaque layer where the first color matches the legend and the second color matches the keypad surface. The keypads are then laser etched to precisely carve the desired characters, patterns, or designs, ensuring high accuracy and clarity.
